Cheam School
About us:
Cheam School, one of the oldest preparatory schools in the UK, was founded in 1645 and is currently situated in Headley, halfway between Newbury and Basingstoke. The school, which originated in Cheam, Surrey, now occupies 85 acres of countryside in Berkshire. It is a co-educational institution catering to children aged 3 to 13, offering both day and weekly/flexible boarding options.
The school is known for its commitment to providing a traditional first-class education and prides itself on its outstanding facilities, including new classrooms, a music school, a science block, and a magnificent indoor sports centre. Cheam School places a strong emphasis on nurturing and supporting every pupil, encouraging the development of leadership, compassion, responsibility, and an awareness of sustainability. This child-centred approach aims to ensure the well-being, happiness, and success of every student.
Cheam School was awarded 'Outstanding' status by Ofsted in its last boarding inspection. Parents and students often highlight the school's traditional values, beautiful manners, and the excellent results achieved. The school fosters a loving yet challenging environment, offering plenty of adventure and opportunities for personal growth.
For children with special needs, Cheam School has a thriving Learning Support Department that assists children with mild forms of dyslexia and dyspraxia. The school effectively caters to the specific needs of each child, with detailed and accurate profiles maintained and shared among the staff.
The school is also known for its competitive spirit in sports, with activities like polo, fencing, and shooting being part of the curriculum. Scholarships and bursaries are available, with awards made based on a family’s financial circumstances and other relevant factors. The bursary awards are subject to annual reassessment of parental means.
Notable alumni of Cheam School include Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and Prince Charles, Prince of Wales.
