Bolton School Girls’ Division
Description
About us:
Bolton School Girls' Division is a segment of Bolton School, a prestigious private day school in Bolton, Greater Manchester. The school includes a co-educational nursery for ages 0–4, a co-educational infant school for ages 3–7, and single-sex junior and senior schools, including sixth forms for ages 11–18. With over 2,500 pupils, it stands as one of the largest independent day schools in the country.
The Girls' Division itself has a notable history, established on 1 October 1877 as one of the earliest public day schools for girls in the country. Initially named Bolton Girls' Day School, it was later renamed Bolton High School for Girls when it moved to a new site in 1891. The school has been committed to providing quality education for girls from the start, as evidenced by its recognition and growth over the years.
In 1913, Sir William Hesketh Lever jointly endowed Bolton Grammar School and Bolton High School for Girls, leading to the establishment of Bolton School with separate Boys' and Girls' Divisions as equal partners. This foundational move in 1915 has allowed both divisions to thrive while maintaining a coherent educational ethos.
The school is equipped with modern facilities, including the Leverhulme Pavilion opened in 1982, a sports complex and swimming pool opened in 1986, and the Arts & Conference Centre opened in 1993 by Diana, Princess of Wales. Moreover, Patterdale Hall serves as an outdoor pursuits center located at the southern end of Ullswater in the Lake District, providing students with various opportunities for outdoor education and team-building activities.
Bolton School offers an extensive range of extra-curricular activities, with over 100 clubs and activities available for pupils, including orchestras, choirs, and sports teams. The school has a strong sporting heritage and a commendable record in regional and national competitions. Moreover, students are encouraged to engage in community service and personal development programs like the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and the National Citizen Service, emphasizing the school's commitment to holistic education and character building.
