Description
About us:
Channing School, located in Highgate, North London, is an independent day school for girls aged 4-18. The school is known for its focus on academic excellence, nurturing independent thinking, confidence, and creativity among its students. Channing School is a member of the Girls' Schools Association and upholds Unitarian principles, encouraging pupils to develop respect, tolerance, and understanding of all faiths, as well as individual and social responsibility.
The school has a rich history, having been established in 1885 by the Revd. Robert Spears and endowed by the Misses Matilda and Emily Sharpe. It was originally named Channing House and was intended primarily for the daughters of Unitarian ministers. Over the years, the school has expanded both in terms of facilities and student numbers.
The school's facilities are modern and well-equipped, supporting a wide range of academic and extracurricular activities. The Senior School comprises several buildings including Brunner House, Haigh House, Founders Hall, and a complex housing a Sixth Form Centre and a Sports Hall with a Fitness Suite. The Junior School, known as Fairseat, was the home of Sir Sydney Waterlow and is located near Waterlow Park.
The current Headmistress of Channing School is Lindsey Hughes, who has been leading the school since 2020. Prior to her current role, she was the deputy head of Lady Eleanor Holles and director of students at St Helen and St Katharine.
Channing School offers a supportive and community-focused environment. Most students come from within a three-mile radius of the school, creating a close-knit community. The school places a strong emphasis on encouraging enquiring minds and independent thought, with philosophy lessons starting from year 7.
Special Education Needs (SEN) support is available at the school, catering to a variety of needs including ASD, Aspergers, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia, and more.
The fees for the 2023-2024 academic year are £7,500 per term for the Prep/Junior School and £8,290 per term for the Senior School and Sixth Form. The school offers means-tested financial support to ensure that children who would benefit from an education at Channing School are not excluded for financial reasons. Scholarships are also available in several categories including academic, art, and music.
